The Commodore 128 (C128) was one of the most interesting and technically advanced 8-bit home computers of the 1980s. Introduced in 1985, it was designed as the successor to the hugely successful Commodore 64. The Background

During the early 1980s, Commodore Business Machines was one of the biggest names in home computing.

The company’s Commodore 64, introduced in 1982, had become extraordinarily successful. It was popular because it combined relatively low cost with excellent graphics and sound. It was particularly successful as a games machine, but it was also used for programming, education and home business applications.

By 1984, however, Commodore needed a new computer. The company wanted something that could appeal to existing C64 owners but also provide capabilities that made it more suitable for serious computing.

One important lesson from the C64 was that users wanted compatibility with existing software. Commodore therefore made C64 compatibility one of the fundamental design goals of the new machine.


Development of the C128

The C128 was developed during 1984–85 by a Commodore engineering team led by Bil Herd.

Rather than simply creating a faster C64, the engineers designed a much more ambitious machine.

One of its most unusual features was its two-processor architecture. The computer contained a MOS 8502 processor for its normal operation and a Zilog Z80A processor that was primarily used to support the CP/M operating system.

This meant that the C128 could effectively operate as several different computers.

The three main environments were:

  • C64 mode – providing compatibility with most C64 software.

Externally, the C128 looked somewhat like an enlarged and more sophisticated C64. It retained Commodore’s familiar keyboard layout but added features such as a numeric keypad and additional function keys.

The machine contained 128 KB of RAM, twice as much as the C64. It also had improved graphics capabilities and a much more powerful version of Commodore BASIC.

The original C128’s hardware included the familiar SID sound chip, which helped maintain C64 compatibility, along with the VIC-IIe graphics chip and a second video chip known as the VDC.

The VDC was particularly important because it provided an 80-column display, something that was useful for word processing, spreadsheets and other business applications.


BASIC 7.0

One of the biggest improvements over the C64 was the computer’s built-in version of BASIC.

The C64 had shipped with BASIC 2.0, which was quite limited when it came to controlling the machine’s graphics and sound.

The C128 included BASIC 7.0.

The C128 contained a Z80 processor specifically to support CP/M.

This meant that C128 owners could use certain word processors, spreadsheets and other business applications that had been written for CP/M.

The Commodore 128D

Commodore later introduced the C128D, particularly popular in European markets.

The C128D had a substantially different physical design. Instead of having a separate computer and disk drive, it incorporated a 1571-compatible disk drive into the main unit.

It also had a detachable keyboard, making it more convenient to use as a desktop computer.

The C128D was particularly attractive to people who wanted to use their computer for serious applications rather than simply playing games.

The C128 as a Business Computer

There were also games and applications that took advantage of C128-specific features, although relatively few commercial games were developed exclusively for the machine. Developers generally preferred to target the much larger C64 market.


The Arrival of the Amiga

The C128 appeared at an interesting moment in computing history.

In 1985, Commodore also introduced the Amiga 1000, which represented a completely new generation of technology.

The Amiga offered dramatically more advanced graphics, sound and processing capabilities than the company’s 8-bit machines.

Consequently, the C128 was something of a transitional computer. It represented the peak of Commodore’s 8-bit technology, while the Amiga represented the company’s future.

The two machines were therefore sold alongside each other for several years, but Commodore increasingly concentrated its attention on the Amiga family.


The End of the C128

The C128 remained in production until around 1990.

By this point, the computer industry had changed dramatically. IBM-compatible PCs were becoming increasingly dominant in business computing, while the Amiga was becoming Commodore’s main advanced home-computer platform.

The C128, C64 and other older 8-bit systems were eventually discontinued.

The C128 nevertheless had a significant run and became one of the most capable and versatile 8-bit computers of its generation.

Today, the Commodore 128 is remembered by enthusiasts as a fascinating piece of computer history.
